Adrian W Gelb MBChB, FRCPC, FRCA is Distinguished Professor (emeritus) in the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, University of California San Francisco (UCSF). He was the Vice Chair of the UCSF Anesthesia Department (2004-2011). Prior to that he was the Anesthesia Chair at Western University in Canada.
Professor Gelb has served as a leader in multiple national and international Anesthesia Societies having been the President of 3 societies. He is currently the Secretary of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) and past chair of the Safety and Quality of Practice Committee.
He is the author of >300 publications including 5 books. He has given > 350 invited lectures that include 16 named lectureships. He is an honorary professor at 3 universities.

Albert Dahan Leiden University Medical Center, Netherland

Dr. Dahan graduated from the Free University in Amsterdam (MD) and Leiden University (PhD). He is head of Research at the Department of Anesthesiology and full professor of anesthesiology at Leiden University. He founded and heads the Anesthesia & Pain Research Unit at Leiden University Medical Center, since 1995, a non-profit academic institute that performs outcome research in anesthesia and pain management aimed at improvement of care in anesthesia and pain treatment and the wide distribution of gained knowledge, in close cooperation with non-academic partners. Prof Dahan published some 370 peer reviewed papers on topics related to the control of breathing, opioid pharmacology, ketamine pk and pd, and use of deep neuromuscular block. He currently supervises the anesthesia graduate school with some 20 phd students.

André Denault Montreal Heart Institute, Canada

André Denault MD PhD FRCPC FASE ABIM-CCM, FCCS
André Denault is an academic-physician with special interests in ultrasound. His medical qualifications and specialties include internal medicine (1991), critical care medicine (1993) and anesthesia (1996). In 2010 he completed a PhD in biomedical Science at the University of Montreal. He has advanced certification in National Board in Echocardiography in perioperative transesophageal echocardiography and the American College Chest Physician certification in critical care ultrasound. Dr Denault has written more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, 46 book chapters and 3 textbooks on perioperative transesophageal and critical care ultrasound. The 2nd edition TEE Multimedia Manual in 2010 was nominated by the British Medical Association as one of the top five cardiology books of the year in 2011.
He has been invited as speaker in local, national and international meeting. He won several teaching awards. He currently works as a cardiac anesthesiologist and intensivist at the Montreal Heart Institute and as a general intensivist at the Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal in Canada. Aryeh Shander, M.D., FCCM, FCCP, is the Emeritus Chair, Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine, Pain Management and Hyperbaric Medicine at Englewood Hospital & Medical Center in Englewood, NJ. He is an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology, Medicine & Surgery at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City and Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Shander is a founding member of the Board of Directors and was a Past President for National Anemia Action Council (NAAC). Dr. Shander is also a founding member and President-Elect of the Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists (SOCCA) formerly, ASCCA where he serves on committees, both locally and nationally, and in addition, is a member of the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) where he served as Chair of Committee on Patient Blood Management. In 1997 Dr. Shander was recognized by Time magazine as one of America's "Heroes of Medicine." Dr. Shander received his medical degree from the University Of Vermont College Of Medicine in Burlington and completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York, where he also served as Chief Resident. Additional postgraduate training included a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine and a residency in Anesthesiology, both at Montefiore Medical Center. Barry McGuire Ninewells Hospital, UK

Barry McGuire is a Consultant Anaesthetist at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, Scotland. He trained in anaesthesia in the Scotland and Australia and has particular interest in anaesthesia for Head and Neck surgery, advanced airway management, paediatric anaesthesia and critical incident reporting.

Christopher A Troianos, MD, FASE is Professor and Chair of the Anesthesiology Institute of the Cleveland Clinic and Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. The Anesthesiology Institute at Cleveland Clinic unites all anesthesiology providers in general anesthesiology, cardiothoracic anesthesiology, pain medicine, pediatric & congenital cardiac anesthesiology, critical care medicine, regional (community) practice, outcomes research, education, and more than 15 subspecialized sections within one fully integrated model of care.

Dr. Troianos received a Bachelor of Science degree with University Honors in Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University and his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed a residency in anesthesiology, followed by a cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is board-certified in anesthesiology, a senior oral board examiner with the American Board of Anesthesiology, and a fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography.

Dr. Troianos has earned a national and international reputation as a cardiac anesthesiologist and participated on several national task forces that required collaboration among multispecialty societies to develop practice guidelines. He was part of the original task force that developed training guidelines in perioperative TEE and subsequently quality improvement guidelines in perioperative TEE. He was the lead author for the SCA/ASE’s practice guidelines for ultrasound guided vascular access. He has shared his expertise in numerous peer-reviewed publications, authored the anesthesiology textbook, “Anesthesia for the Cardiac Patient.”, and has been an invited speaker to national and international scientific educational conferences. His experience with graduate medical education spans two decades, having served as a Residency Program at two institutions, and as Chair of the Graduate Medical Education Committee at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Dr. Troianos is currently serving as President of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA), 2017-19. He also serves as the Secretary/Treasurer on the Board of Directors for the National Board of Echocardiography, which develops certification examinations and recognizes physicians who fulfill the requirements for board certification in echocardiography. Dr. Troianos has served as the Chair of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA) Economics Committee in the past and is currently the Chair of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA’s) Committee on Economics. This committee focuses on ensuring fair payment from all payers for anesthesiology services, and is one of the most important committees of the ASA for its work on a national level.

David Mazer University of Toronto, Canada

David Mazer, M.D. is a Professor in the Departments of Anesthesia and Physiology at the University of Toronto. He received his medical training at the University of Saskatchewan (MD 1978) and worked as a family physician in Inuvik NWT (north of the arctic circle), Whakatane New Zealand, and Cudworth Saskatchewan before attending the University of Toronto to complete his residency in Anesthesia (FRCPC 1985). He subsequently completed his fellowship training in cardiovascular anesthesia research at the University of California San Francisco and has been actively engaged in clinical practice and research in Cardiac anesthesia and critical care since 1987. He has been Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia, Coordinator of Critical Care and Medical Director of CVICU at St. Michael's Hospital, and Vice-Chair for Research for the Department of Anesthesia at the University of Toronto. He currently is Chair of the Research Ethics Board of St. Michael’s Hospital. Dr. Mazer’s translational research has focused on improving the practice of Cardiac Anesthesia. His research program focuses on perioperative blood conservation, cardiac physiology and perioperative organ protection. He has co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, including practice guidelines and position statements related to perioperative transfusion and hemostasis from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society. He was a lead anesthesia investigator in the BART trial and is the principal investigator for TRICS III, a global study of transfusion triggers in cardiac surgery.

Florian Falter Royal Papworth Hospital, UK

Dr Florian Falter has been a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge for the past 17 years. Papworth is the biggest cardiac unit in the UK, with a busy surgical heart failure program including transplantation and mechanical assist therapy. It is also one of 5 centres for the advanced therapy of respiratory failure.

After numerous clinical and managerial on a local and national level Florian has more recently developed an interest in efficiency in healthcare. He has established a successful program of fast-tracking cardiac surgical patients and is involved in establishing a peri-operative medicine program in cardiac surgery. His interest in lean but safe practice has led to a successful co-operation with the London campus of the ESCP business school. He regularly takes in MBA students as interns and supervises company projects.

Florian’s research interest centres on cardiopulmonary bypass as well as point of care testing in anaesthesia. He holds a visiting professorship at Columbia University in New York and is a lecturer at the University of Bristol.

Florian regularly lectures nationally and internationally and is the author of numerous papers, book chapters as well as three textbooks. He chairs the Networking World Anesthesia Convention (NWAC), the world’s largest independent CME event in anaesthesia.

In his spare time he enjoys diving and works as a scuba diving instructor.

J.P. Abenstein, M.S.E.E., M.D. is a Consultant in Anesthesiology, an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, and on the faculty in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Mayo Clinic. Prior to joining the staff at Mayo, Dr. Abenstein was an anesthesiologist in the United States Navy, and was deployed with the U.S. Marines on the USS Tarawa on Surgical Team 9. He has chaired Mayo’s Capital Equipment Committee, Acute Care Monitoring Committee, and Workstation Oversight Group. Currently, he is the Chair of the Medical Equipment Technology Standardization Group. He has been a long-standing member of the MN Blue Cross Blue Shield Medical Policy Committee and the State of Minnesota’s Medical Education and Research Costs Committee. He also chaired Minnesota’s Health Technology Advisory Committee. He was ASA’s President in 2015 and remains active in organized medicine. Dr. Abenstein received his engineering degrees from Duke University and the University of Wisconsin. He received his medical degree from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, completed his Residency and Fellowship in Cardiac Anesthesiology at Chicago’s Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center, and is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Jonathan S Jahr Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, USA

Dr. Jahr has been at the forefront the conduct of definitive preclinical and clinical studies involving the application of hemoglobin based oxygen carriers in the treatment of hemorrhage and orthopedic surgery. He is the world’s foremost expert in the use of advanced diagnostic techniques in the study of the impact of volumizing fluids and HBOCs on coagulapathy, and related thrombin and platelet function. He has served as principal investigator in Phase I trials of Alliance Corporations’ Perflubon™, Phase II trials of Hemosol’s Hemolink™, and Phase II and Phase III trials of Biopure’s HemoPure™ product. Dr. Jahr has previously studied OxyVita®’s impact on coagulapathy in ex vivo studies and reported his findings in the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, Vol 22:1, 34-39 (February, 2008). Throughout his extraordinary professional career, Dr. Jahr has been interested in the use of resuscitative fluids, blood transfusions, and intervention in the treatment of severe trauma, and the clinical efficacy of the use of blood substitutes, including perfluorocarbon technologies and hemoglobin based oxygen carriers to reduce the need for blood transfusions in clinical practice. He has been the principal investigator in over 30 clinical trials, has published over 150 studies, abstracts, review articles and case studies. Kazuyoshi Hirota, MD, PhD, FRCA is Vice-Dean of Hirosaki University Graduate School of Medicine, Professor and Chairman of Department of Anesthesiology in the Graduate School of Medicine and Deputy-Director of the University Hospital.

Professor Kazuyoshi Hirota entered Department of Anesthesiology and also Hirosaki University Graduate School of Medicine, April 1986. He received his PhD from Hirosaki University Graduate School of Medicine in March 1990. Subsequently, he became an Instructor of Department of Anesthesiology in Hiroskai University Hospital. He went to University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology from July 1993 to June 1994, and also to Leicester University as an Honorary Clinical Fellow of Anaesthesia Department from June 1995 to May 1996. He became an Assistant Professor of Department of Anesthesiology in Hirosaki University Hospital. Then, he promoted to be a Professor and Chairman of Department of Anesthesiology in Hirosaki University Graduate School of Medicine. He has also been Vice-Dean of the Graduate School of Medicine since February 2012 and Deputy-Director of the University Hospital since April 2018.

After completing her medical studies at the University of Vienna in 1991, she was trained at the Department of Anaesthesiology, General Intensive Care and Pain Management at the Vienna Medical University, Austria. She became Professor in Anaesthesiology in 2000 and Chairwoman of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at the Evangelic Hospital Vienna, Austria in 2008. Dr. Kietaibl was president of the Austrian Society of Anaesthesiology (ÖGARI) 2011-2013, was chairperson of Subcommittee 6 Transfusion & Haemostasis of the European Society of Anaesthesiologists (ESA) 2010-2012. Currently she is member of the Austrian Task Force on Perioperative Bleeding Management of the ÖGARI, member of the Guidelines Committee of the ESA, and Austrian delegate at the European Board of Anaesthesiology (EBA), standing committee patient safety. She coordinated the ESA guidelines on the management of severe perioperative bleeding published 2013 and the update 2017. She is co-worker of the ESA guidelines on regional anaesthesia under anticoagulation and perioperative venous thromboprophylaxis. Dr. Kietaibl coordinated the multidisciplinary Austrian guidelines on preoperative patient evaluation (Bundesqualitätsleitlinie) 2013, on patient blood management (Qualitätsstandard) 2017, and a national guidance on the management of patients with hip-near fractures while on oral anticoagulants (klinischer Pfad) 2014 and 2016. She implemented many recommendations into applications for smartphones. Her major research interests are perioperative bleeding management, volume replacement, and postoperative pain. In 2009 she launched an innovative multi-media e-learning platform www.perioperativebleeding.org including modules with European CME accreditation. She lectures at the Sigmund Freud Privatuniversität since foundation of the School of Medicine in 2016. Since 2015 she holds certified programmes at the Danube University Krems for international postgraduate participants and started a Master of Science-course in Patient Blood Management in autumn 2017. Dr. Ban Tsui completed his medical training at Dalhousie University, Halifax, in 1995 after obtaining his Masters of Science in Pharmacy in 1991. Upon completing his anesthesiology residency in 2005, he joined the faculty and joined the hepatic transplantation anesthesiology team. He pursues research interests in clinical care, basic research, and education. Dr. Sakai has been elected to the Association of University Anesthesiologists (2013), and was promoted to Professor (2014), and appointed as the inaugural Director of Scholarly Development (2014). Joerg Ender has been the Director of Department for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, Heart Center, Leipzig since 2005. Mercedes Susan Mandell BSc. She obtained her PhD in Biochemistry and MD at the University of Toronto in 1982 and 1985. Dr. Mandell has been the recipient of research funding from the Medical Council of Canada, National Institutes of Health and Industry grants. He has been the principle investigator for over 25 clinical trials, with over 120 publications. He is actively involved in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Programs for major liver resection, major pancreatic resections, oesophagectomy, and gastrectomy at Austin.

Anselm Bräuer

Prof. Dr. Anselm Bräuer DEAA is consultant at the Department of Anesthesiology at the University Hospital in Göttingen, Germany.

He has graduated after studying medicine in Würzburg and Göttingen and has completed his six years of residency in Göttingen and Halle. After registration as a specialist in anesthesiology he acquired additional titles in emergency medicine and intensive care medicine. He has specialized knowledge in transesophageal echocardiography and neuromonitoring.

In the last 20 years he has conducted many clinical trials and published about 50 articles about hypothermia. He is coauthor of the German and Austrian guideline for the prevention of perioperative hypothermia.

Most recently, he is the author of the first book worldwide about perioperative hypothermia and perioperative temperature management.

Jie Zhang

Jie Zhang received the Bachelor’s degree from The Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences in 1993, the Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Anesthesia and Intensive Care from The Chinese University of HongKong in 2016. From 1998 until now, she worked as an anesthetist in The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University. At present, she is associated professor and associated chief physician in the Department of Anesthesiology. Her current research interest is perioperative hemodynamic management and blood conservation.

Laurence Weinberg

In this lecture I will overview the contemporary evidence regarding the importance of blood pressure and oxygen delivery using vasoactive therapy fluid and management strategies. I will overview the principles of haemodynamic optimisation for patients undergoing major surgery. The presentation will provide a pragmatic perioperative fluid management model to evaluate the effectiveness of care, improve clinician practices, and reduce the risk of fluid-related adverse events. In the absence of definitive guidelines, an approach to haemodynamic optimisation based on patient factors, the type of surgery will be presented.

In this lecture I will articulate the health economic implications of the development of surgical complications in patients undergoing major surgery. The financial impact of minor complications will be overviewed. The value of meaningful and sustainable patient care quality improvement programmes that minimise extreme variability in anaesthesia care will be explored. The development and implementation of monitoring and outcome projects aimed at reducing major morbidity from high complexity surgery will be presented.

Sheng Wang

Dr.Sheng Wang is Chief of Department of Anesthesiology, Guangdong General Hospital and Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences, Guangzhou, China. He received M.D in Anesthesiology from Peking Union Medical College in 2003, and was Master of Cardiac Anesthesia of International Heart School of Italy in Massa. He is now Vice President of Committee of Chinese Society of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesiology; Member of Chinese Society of Anesthesiology(CSA) Youth Committee.

Shinichi Sakura

Dr. Sakura is Professor and Director of Surgical Center of Shimane University Hospital and Department of Anesthesiology at Shimane University School of Medicine in Izumo City, Japan. He graduated from Shimane Medical University, Japan, where he received his basic clinical anesthesia and research training. He worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Anesthesia, University of California, San Francisco to develop a functional and histological animal model of local anesthetic neurotoxicity. Dr. Sakura’s research has involved balanced anesthesia, epidural anesthesia and respiratory function, spinal anesthesia, ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks, and neurotoxicity of local anesthetic, about which he has many publications in international journals. He has been invited to present lectures and participate as a faculty member and/or instructor for peripheral nerve workshops at many scientific meetings. He is an associate editor for Journal of Anesthesia and has been a guest reviewer for leading international anesthesia journals including Anesthesiology, Anesthesia & Analgesia, British Journal of Anaesthesia and Clinical Journal of Anesthesia.
